If the demo is any indication, then Dante's Inferno will be a video game masterpiece in art direction, sound design, and musical score. While I'm willing to spare criticism of the technical side of the graphics due to the increasing limits of console hardware, this is one of the most beautiful looking games from an aesthetic standpoint I've ever seen.
I've read Dante Alighieri's first episode of The Divine Comedy, and by the looks of this adaptation, the translation of his visionary landscape of Hell into the interactive entertainment realm will not be an insult to classical literature.
On the other hand, the actual gameplay is a bit troubling. It's of the killing-the-unending-army-of-demons variety that becomes highly repetitious. And I really hate the button mashing gimmicks. To make matters worse, the camera is uncontrollable, which I feel cheapens the experience.
That said, however, the game be worth $60 just for the art direction alone. Garry Schyman, who also scored BioShock, delivers yet another movie-quality soundtrack that is frightening and mesmerizing all at once.
